Babcock’s storage

Categories List:
Butte, MT, United States, Montana, USA 59701
Year Built/Circa: pre-1884
Current Use: Museum for historic tours
Vacancy: Occupied
Historic Significance: Complex architecture in one of the few surviving commercial alley buildings in Butte. Associated with Babcock's and its successor, Mattingly's, prominent early businesses in Butte. Both were men's stores.

This three-story alley building and the overpass to 117 N. Main are both pre-1884. Babcock’s Hats & Furs was out of business in 1900, so the sign is at least that old. Ground level was carriage or auto storage; middle level was storage for the store across the overpass, and the top level was sleeping rooms accessed by a stair on the outside of the building, through a door in the far side of the overpass.
